From Couch to 5K: A Runner’s First Month
Everyone starts somewhere. If a 5K feels impossibly far right now, good news: your first month is less about fitness and more about building a habit your body can grow into. Here is how to make it stick.
Start Slower Than You Think
The biggest mistake new runners make is going too hard, too soon. Enthusiasm is not the problem — impatience is. Ease in, and your joints, tendons and motivation all stay intact.
Your First Four Weeks
- Week 1 — alternate one minute of jogging with two minutes of walking.
- Week 2 — even it out to two minutes running, two walking.
- Week 3 — run three, walk one.
- Week 4 — string together your first continuous ten-minute run.
The goal of month one is not speed or distance. It is simply becoming someone who runs.
Make It Easy to Show Up
- Lay your kit out the night before.
- Run the same three days each week so it becomes routine.
- Track each run and celebrate small wins.
Follow this and a 5K stops being a dream and becomes a date on the calendar. Our Marathon Prep coaches love helping first-timers cross that very first finish line.
