Simple, playful activities using things you already have, to build early skills and lots of giggles.<\/p>\n

Five activities to try this week<\/h5>\n

None of these need special equipment, and all of them work in a small space. Ten or fifteen minutes is plenty \u2014 with toddlers, stopping while it is still fun is the whole trick.<\/p>\n

  1. Kitchen treasure basket.<\/strong> Fill a bowl with safe odds and ends \u2014 a wooden spoon, a silicone brush, a metal whisk, a fabric scrap. Let your toddler explore each one. You are building vocabulary and sensory awareness without saying a word.<\/li>\n
  2. Posting box.<\/strong> Cut a slot in a shoebox lid and hand over a pile of milk-bottle lids or large buttons. The concentration this produces is remarkable, and it is quietly training the pincer grip needed later for a pencil.<\/li>\n
  3. Colour hunt.<\/strong> Name a colour and go looking for it together around the room. It builds attention, categorising and a surprising amount of conversation.<\/li>\n
  4. Pouring station.<\/strong> Two jugs, a tray and a little water. Expect spills, put a towel down, and let it run. This is early maths and hand control in the most satisfying possible form.<\/li>\n
  5. Story in a bag.<\/strong> Drop three unrelated objects into a bag and make up a story using all three. Toddlers will start by naming, then begin adding their own turns.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The best activity is almost always the simplest one you will actually do twice. Repetition is where toddlers do their real learning.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Making it work on a busy day<\/h5>\n

    • <\/i> Set up while they are occupied elsewhere, so the activity is ready the moment interest strikes.<\/li>\n
    • <\/i> Keep a “yes drawer” at toddler height \u2014 things they may always take out without asking.<\/li>\n
    • <\/i> Follow their lead. If the posting box becomes a hat, that is still a good outcome.<\/li>\n
    • <\/i> Finish before the wheels come off. A short, happy ending makes tomorrow’s attempt far easier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      What to expect<\/h5>\n

      Toddlers rarely play the way the instructions imagine. They will tip out the treasure basket, sort nothing, and want the same activity eleven days running. All of that is normal and useful. Your job is not to keep them on task \u2014 it is to keep them interested, safe and talking.<\/p>\n
